2016 Olympics In Rio
Politicians in Washington, D.C., ,Chicago, Milwaukee and Madison are obviously disheartened following the announcement that Chicago will not be the city designated to host the 2016 Olympics. President Obama put himself on the line alongside his wife, Michelle, and Oprah Winfrey. And they didn't pull it off. Apparently fame and eloquence weren't what the Olympic Committee was after this time around.
The high speed rail enthusiasts will now need to find another excuse for the implementation of such a project. The people who owned the real estate that would've been sold for Olympic development will just have to find some other way to profit from the slum buildings they hoped to rid themselves of at, no doubt, a big profit.
The taxpayers can breathe a sigh of relief since they've dodged a huge tax increase that would've followed them (us) for decades following the 2016 event.
Certainly this would've brought some notoriety and a short-term bump in these economies, but the long-term prognosis would've been for more pain than gain. The politicians saw this as the answer to their dreams for big new expenditures with the accompanying bonding issues. They'd have been long gone when you and me were still paying for the nice venues that bore the names of the politicians.
There is more than enough pork being stuffed down our throats already, we didn't need another excuse for more costs. As it turns out, the cost of flying the President and First Lady on separate flights to and from Copenhagen was more than high enough.

I see the talking point now is the cost of the trip to Denmark. If Obama had not gone, and Chicago did not get the Olympics, the phony outrage would have been twice as loud.
